WOODLOT COMMUNITY SEEKS OPEN DIALOGUE ON FORESTRY ISSUES

On Aug. 27, the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association hosted an open meeting on the current situation with the Northern Pulp mill and the future of our communities. Although it may have seemed odd to some that the NSWOOA would be the ones to call a meeting like this, our organization was clear that people’s concerns needed to be expressed and that it was time to consider an alternative future than the one we were heading towards. CANADA: EASTERN GROWERS PLANT NEW PEAR

More pears are being produced on the rainy eastern side of North America, and the big reason is that growers can plant a nice Bartlett-like variety that is virtually immune to fire blight. The new production is taking place in Canada – the two provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia – where the variety Harovin Sundown is being grown by a half-dozen growers and marketed as a club variety.
