The sleepy little community of Alton had a rude awakening over the past few months. Heavy trucks pounding over its highway and back roads. Machines digging and spreading gravel. And it’s all tied to a natural gas storage project that has some of the locals on edge. “Being a community member, it’s up to us to educate ourselves on what they are doing, but it’s more their place to alleviate our fears," Theresa Rafuse said of Alton Natural Gas Storage LP. CANFOR ENTERS WOOD PELLET BUSINESS

Canfor plans to construct a pellet plant at each of the company’s Chetwynd and Fort St. John sawmill sites, in partnership with Pacific Bioenergy Corporation. The two plants will have a combined annual production capacity of 175,000 tonnes of wood pellets, the sale of which is tied to a long term agreement with a power utility customer. The total investment of $58 million will include electrical self-generation capacity of 3 megawatts supported through BC Hydro's Power Smart Load Displacement Program. (read more)
