Kings County egg farmer Aaron Hiltz called the $1,500 fine he received after pleading guilty in Kentville provincial court Wednesday to keeping more hens than allowed under a provincial supply management system a good investment. “I feel like we both kind of won,” he said in an interview. Hiltz, who pastures his hens, said Nova Scotia Egg Producers, which manages the supply management system, succeeded in enforcing its regulations. (read more)

Vermont’s locally produced, quirkily used Bag Balm ointment long ago moved beyond the bovine, but now it’s going corporate. Few people even know what’s in it: a greasy product that is as Vermont as Ben and Jerry’s. For 114 years, customers have rubbed it on everything from their hands to their feet to cow udders. “Oh, I use it mostly for my hands or dry feet,” said Shawna Wilkerson, a 17-year employee of the company.
