CONSIDERATIONS WHEN PLANNING CHANGES TO A COW HERD
Source: Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development When it comes to deciding on expanding a cow herd, or taking over an existing one, there are a few critical checkpoints to be considered. “In recent months there has been a lot of talk about the potential for beef herd expansion due to the historically high beef and cattle prices the industry is experiencing,” says Bruce Viney, business development – risk, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Olds. “Experts from all facets of the industry have been writing and talking about the opportunities and limiting factors to start the next expansion phase of the cattle cycle.” (read more)

TINY SPANISH ISLAND NEARS ITS GOAL: 100 PERCENT RENEWABLE ENERGY
It actually takes quite a lot of fossil fuel power to reach the tiny Spanish island of El Hierro. Halifax police are looking for a $5,000 saddle that was rustled earlier this month from a car parked on a city street. “The car was broken into,” Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Bourdages said police have checked with local equestrian businesses and other resale shops, but have been unable to find the saddle, which has the saddle’s brand name, G. Passier & Sohn, Hannover, printed on a metal tag. The inner flap of the German made black saddle is stamped PS-BAUM, 18.0. (read more)
