NEW LABELS COMING FOR MECHANICALLY TENDERIZED MEAT

Canadian shoppers will be able to see next month whether the beef they’re buying has been mechanically tenderized. Labelling regulations to take effect Aug. 21 are designed to protect consumers after the largest meat recall in the country’s history two years ago. (read more)

FARM CENTRE TO HOST TRANSITION ISLAND INFORMATION SESSION 
The Farm Centre will host the second free information session on the International Transition movement and the upcoming Transition Island Training Sessions. The information session will take place Tuesday July 22 at 7pm at the Farm Centre, Charlottetown. The transition movement is a community-led process that helps that towns, villages, cities, and neighborhoods become stronger and happier by building resilience in communities to address the global challenges of peak oil, climate change, increasing energy costs, economic instability, and resource depletion. GM TRIALS AT EXPERIMENTAL FARM HAD LAPSES

Agriculture Canada made repeat lapses in its trials of two genetically modified crops at the Central Experimental Farm in 2011 and 2012, documents released under an access-to-information request show. A 2012 email from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there was a possibility of mixing GM and non-GM crops at the Farm. The CFIA regulates all GM trials in Canada. (read more)
