GOVERNMENT STRENGTHENS ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION FOR OFFSHORE

Government introduced legislation today, Oct. 7, to ensure greater accountability for companies operating in the Nova Scotia offshore. Energy Minister Andrew Younger introduced amendments to the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Resources Accord Implementation (Nova Scotia) Act to strengthen offshore environmental liability protections and improve transparency and clarity of operations. FRENCH ENVOY SAYS CANADA NEEDS TO CATCH UP TO OTHERS ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The man tasked by France’s President with building support for a global climate change treaty sees Canada as one of those countries unwilling to face up to the facts. Nicolas Hulot, French President François Hollande’s special envoy for the protection of the planet, sees the prospects of reaching an accord to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in negotiations in Paris next year as daunting. FOOD TAMPERING SUSPECTED IN LINKLETTER FARMS POTATOES

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is advising consumers of a possible food tampering situation involving potatoes harvested and packed by Linkletter Farms Ltd. The Summerside company is voluntarily withdrawing certain products following a consumer complaint in which a metal object appears to have been inserted into a potato. (read more)

ARKANSAS COMPANY GETS NSF GRANT FOR LIGNEN-BASED COMPOSTABLE BAGS

In Arkansas, the National Science Foundation has given cycleWood Solutions a $741,221 grant to commercialize its Xylobag, a compostable plastic bag that is made from biofuel byproducts lignen. The company has offtake agreements from two undisclosed retail chains. (read more)
